Bands of MST
Mary-Sue Tobin (MST) is involved in more bands and projects than can be counted. But, here is a list of several of the more venerable ensembles she plays a leading role in.
The Quadraphonnes
Passionate about the saxophone, its characteristics and possibilities, The Quadraphonnes are adventurous! These strong, talented, ladies break the boundaries of the saxophone quartet with their mighty chops, tantalizing grooves, soaring solos and dynamic vocals. Covering a variety of musical styles from jazz-funk-pop, to avant-garde, gypsy-punk and classical, the Quads put on a great show!
MSQ - Mary Sue QUartet / quintet
MSQ is led by saxophonist Mary-Sue Tobin (The Quadraphonnes, PJCE, Rebirth of the Cool and others), an esteemed member of the Portland jazz community. Active in many musical projects as a performer and band-leader, Mary-Sue is excited to introduce the latest version of the MSQuartet /Quintet, featuring some of the original members as well as a couple of new additions.
The MSQuartet, in its current form, performs both originals as well as original arrangements of standards in the style of Benny Golson, Cannonball Adderly, Dexter Gordon, Carla Bley, Wayne Shorter, and other favorites.
The MSQuartet line up has included former members Bill Athens on bass (Trio Subtonic, Mary Kadderly, Ben Darwish, Shirley Nanette and others) Jon Shaw on bass, as well as drummer and PJCE recording artist Ken Ollis. Up and coming jazz piano superstar, David Kim is a recent addition. Special guests have included Pete Peterson on tenor saxophone.
Rebirth of the cool
David Watson is Re-Birthing The Cool: Bebop N Beyond, plays the original music of ‘The Birth Of The Cool’ written by Gerry Mulligan, Miles Davis/Gil Evans, Chet Baker, Dave Pell and Bill Holman plus the hip arrangements of Pete Petersen and originals by David Watson.

The Rhythm Dogs
The Rhythm Dogs, formed in 2000 and based in Portland, play an unusual blend of groove-based jazz, funk, ska, blues, Latin, and Afrobeat. The band is made up of saxophonist Mary-Sue Tobin, trombonist Greg Scholl, keyboardist Chris Azorr, drummer Mark Burdon, percussionist Chuk Barber, and bassist Mark von Bergen. They have recorded four albums of almost entirely originals, the most recent being “The Dogfather” (2018).
You may have seen the dogs at O'Connor's, the Fremont Theater, or even at the Beaverton Farmers Market serving up some fresh beats.
